Male infertility is common and accounts for about 40% of all cases of couples having difficulty in conceiving children, the average male sperm per ejaculation has dropped  by around 50% since 1966. Such a trend means that a 30 year old man in 2005 might have a sperm count of 32 million per ml – about one-quarter the count of the average male born in 1925.

Acupuncture and Sperm

Acupuncture in combination with herbal medicine can increase sperm quality.

Chinese Herbal formulas used in the treatment of male infertility have a strong action on male gonads, which has been confermed by modern research these herbs have been shown to have a androgenic effect, increase in semen production, increased sperm count and improvement in sperm mobility.

Sperm take around 3 months to be produced this means that treatment will need to be done weekly for 12 weeks, there after a sperm test is needed to see if further treatment is required.

Research on Acupuncture and Sperm Quality

40 men with unexplained sperm abnormalities (oligospermia, asthenospermia, or teratozoospermia) were studied. 28 of the men (70%) received acupuncture twice weekly for five weeks. The semen samples from both groups were quantitatively analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. After acupuncture, there was a statistically significant increase in the percentage and number of sperm, and improvement in overall morphology of the sperm without defects seen in the total ejaculates.
